The Ultimate Latex Clothing Care Guide

Whether you are new to latex fashion or a seasoned enthusiast, this comprehensive guide will teach you everything you need to know about washing, shining, dressing, and storing your Latex Luxe garments. Follow these steps, and your latex will last for years to come.

1. How to Wash Latex Clothing

Hygiene is crucial. Latex fits tight against the skin, trapping sweat and oils. Therefore, you must wash your latex garments after every use.

  • Fill a Sink or Bathtub: Use lukewarm water. Never use hot water, as it can damage the rubber.
  • Choose the Right Cleaner: We recommend using a specialized latex cleaner (like Vivishine or Begloss) for the best results. If you don’t have one, a very mild, non-moisturizing dish soap can work in a pinch.
    • Warning: Never use standard laundry detergent, bleach, or harsh chemicals.
  • Gentle Wash: Turn the garment inside out. Submerge it and gently swish it in the water to remove sweat and skin oils. Do not scrub hard.
  • Rinse Thoroughly: If you used soap, rinse the garment with fresh lukewarm water until no residue remains.

2. How to Dry Latex

Proper drying prevents mold and water spots.

  • Drip Dry: Hang the garment on a plastic hanger over the bath or shower.
    • Tip: Never use metal wire hangers, as they can rust or react with the latex.
  • Inside & Out: Latex does not breathe. You must dry the inside first (wipe it down with a lint-free cloth or towel), then turn it right-side out to dry the exterior.
  • Avoid Heat & Sun: Never tumble dry, iron, or hang in direct sunlight. UV rays will degrade the rubber rapidly, causing it to crack and fade.

3. How to Make Latex Shine

That iconic, glossy “wet look” doesn’t happen by itselfโ€”raw latex is naturally matte.

  • Polishing: After washing (while the latex is still wet or after drying), apply a high-quality silicone-based polish or shiner.
  • The Dip Method: For an even, streak-free shine, mix a capful of polish (like Vivishine) into a basin of clean water. Dip your garment in, swirl it around, and then hang it to dry. The water evaporates, leaving a perfect layer of shine.
  • Spot Polishing: For quick touch-ups, apply a small amount of polish to a lint-free cloth or sponge and buff the surface gently.

4. How to Put On Latex (Dressing)

Latex has high friction, making it difficult to put on without lubrication. Forcing it can cause it to rip.

Option A: Lube (Recommended) Use a silicone-based dressing aid (or extra latex polish/shiner). Apply a generous amount to the inside of the garment and your skin. The latex will slide on effortlessly.

Option B: Talcum Powder Dust the inside of the garment and your body with baby powder (talc).

  • Note: Ensure the powder is unscented and talc-based. Cornstarch can turn into a paste if you sweat.

Important Precautions:

  • Watch Your Nails: Sharp fingernails are latex’s worst enemy. Be careful not to dig your nails into the rubber when pulling. Use the pads of your fingers or wear cotton gloves.
  • Remove Jewelry: Take off all rings, watches, and bracelets to avoid snagging.

5. How to Store Latex

Proper storage is the secret to longevity.

  • Clean Before Storing: Never store dirty or sweaty latex.
  • Lubricate or Powder: To prevent the latex from sticking to itself (which can cause permanent fusing), lightly powder the garment or apply a thin layer of silicone oil before storing.
  • The Ziplock Method: Place your garment in a sealed plastic bag (like a Ziplock). Squeeze as much air out as possible. This protects it from ozone and oxidation.
  • Dark & Cool: Store the bag in a drawer or cupboard away from light and heat sources.
  • Hanging: If you prefer to hang your items (like coats or dresses), use wide plastic hangers and cover them with a dark garment bag (black plastic or dark fabric) to block light.

6. Critical Warnings: What to Avoid

To keep your Latex Luxe items in pristine condition, keep them away from:

  1. Oil-Based Products: Baby oil, coconut oil, body lotions, and petroleum jelly (Vaseline) will permanently decompose latex, turning it into a sticky goo. Only use water-based or silicone-based lubricants.
  2. Metals: Copper, brass, and bronze cause a chemical reaction that stains light-colored latex brown. Be careful with coins, keys, and cheap jewelry.
  3. Heat & Light: Keep away from radiators, open flames, and prolonged sunlight.
  4. Sharp Objects: Be mindful of long nails, jewelry, and sharp furniture edges.

7. Repairs

Even with the best care, accidents happen. If you get a small tear, don’t panic.

  • Don’t stitch it.
  • Use a Patch Kit: You can repair small rips using a latex patch and rubber cement (solvent-based glue). Clean the area with alcohol/thinner, apply glue to both the patch and the garment, wait for it to get tacky, and press firmly.
